히브리어 / 영어 원문 해석..
최근 중고서점에서 눈에 띄는 책이 있어, 아주 저렴한 가격에 사왔습니다...
'야베스의 기도 (THE PRAYER OF JABEZ/ 브루스 윌킨슨 저)'라는 책인데, 2008년도에 번역된 건데도, 219쇄인 걸 보면 아주 유명한 책인가 봅니다...
저는 기독교 신자는 아닌데, 종교 서적에 관심이 있어 이런 류의 책을 가끔 봅니다..
이 책은, 아주 짤막한 성경 구절에 깊은 영감을 받은 저자가 방대한 책(?)으로까지, 내게 되었는데.. 실제, 이 성경 구절은 4- 5줄 밖에 되지 않습니다.
그래서, 과연 원문은 어떤 내용일까 궁금해서 찾아봤어요
바로 밑 그림은, 히브리어 (Hebrew)로 쓰여진 것이고요^^, 히브리어를 판독할 능력은 안 돼, 영어 번역본도 같이 찾아봤습니다.

킹 제임스 버전은 문장 틈틈이 고어가 (thou, wouldest) 있어, 약간 읽기가 어려움^^::
Chronicles 4:9~10 (King James Version)
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
NASB 버전은 우리가 읽기에 무난한 영어로 쓰여졌네요~

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, "Because I bore him with pain."
Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!" And God granted him what he requested.
■ 한 번, 한 줄씩 해석해 보겠습니다..
Chronicles 4:9~10 : 구약 역대기 4장 9절에서 10절
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, : 야베스는 그의 형제들보다 영예로웠습니다.
and his mother named him Jabez saying, : 그의 어머니는 그에게 야베스란 이름을 붙여주었습니다.
"Because I bore him with pain." : 고통스럽게 그를 낳았기 때문에요.
Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying : 그러자 야베스는 이스라엘의 하느님께 간청했습니다.
"Oh that You would bless me indeed : "오, 정말로 저를 축복해주시고..
and enlarge my border, : 저의 경계를 넓혀 주시기를,
and that Your hand might be with me : 당신의 손길이 저와 함께 하도록 허락하시기를,
and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!"
저를 해악으로부터 지켜주시어, 고통을 당하지 않기를!"
And God granted him what he requested. : 그리하여 하느님은 그의 간청을 허락하셨습니다.
※ 약간의 주석
* 킹제임스버전에 나온 brethren 는 종교적인 의미의 '형제들'인데 반해..
NASB에 나온 brother는 '형제들'은 가족의 의미가 좀 더 짙어 보이네요..
* call on somebody
1. to formally invite or ask somebody to speak, etc
공식적으로 누군가에게 발언하도록 청함.
2. to ask or demand that somebody do something
누군가에게 무엇을 해달라고 청하거나 요구함
* oh, that you would..는 if only 나 I wish I would 뜻을 지니고 있습니다
- if only : ..하기만 한다면..
- I wish I would.. : ..라면
- Would that 절도.. 같은 의미
* that..may not : ~하지 않도록
