 except for와 except의 차이

 

먼저, 간단히 말씀드리면,,

 

수식할 명사가 있으면 ☞ except for 또는 except 가능

 

(적절한) 수식할 명사가 없으면 ☞ except for만 가능

 

■  예문을 들면서 볼게요!

 

[예문]

Everyone likes Tom except for me. : 날 빼고는 모두 탐을 좋아해.

 

해설 : Everyone except me (나를 제외한 모든 사람들) 말이 되니까.. 

 

※ 이 때는 except for와 except  둘 다 쓸 수 있습니다.

 

 

I gave back all of the rest money except for the deposit. (O) 나는 계약금을 빼고 나머지 모든 돈을 돌려주었어.

 

I gave back all of the rest money except the deposit. (O) 

  

money except the deposit 말이 되므로 둘 다 쓸 수 있습니다.

 

 

[또 하나의 힌트]

 

all, any, every, no, everything, anybody, nobody, nothing 등과 같은 단어들 뒤에서는 except for나 except 둘 다 가능합니다.

■  적절하게 수식할 명사가 없으면, except for만 가능

 

 

* The room was entirely empty except for me. (O) 나 혼자를 제외하면, 방에 아무도 없어..

 

 The room was entirely empty except me. (X)

 

 the room except me 나는 방을 수식할 수 없으므로 for를 써줘야 함

 

 

* I was naked except for my socks. : 난 양말만 빼고 모두 벗었어.

 I except my socks가 말이 안되므로, except for를 씁니다.

■ 또, 문장 앞에 올 경우, 항상 except for를 씀

 

 - Except for you, everyone has helped. (O) 

 

 - Except you, everyone has helped. (X)

 

□  전치사, 접속사 앞에는 except만 씀

 

 

 

I work out every day except when it rains. : 나는 비가 올 때를 빼고는, 매일 운동을 해.

 

 

Don't go this way except in an emergency. : 긴급한 경우를 빼고는 이 길로 가지 마..

In (1), except for Morris does not have any noun to modify within the sentence. Notice it cannot modify the room because the room except Morris doesn't make sense. It, rather, modifies the proposition, i.e., the room was entirely empty.

 

In (2), on the other hand, except for me does have a noun to modify, i.e., everyone, because everyone except me makes sense here. (Incidentally, note also that, right after the noun it modifies, except works, but not except for)
