suppose, supposing, be supposed to 정리

 

오늘의 주제는 be supposed to와 suppose로, 회화나 독해할 때 종종 볼 수 있는데, 좀 어렵게 느껴져 정리해 봤습니다^^

 

1. suppose : 생각하다 (= think, believe 등) 

 

[예문을 보면]

I suppose it's too late to go home now, right? : 지금 집에 가기엔 넘 늦은 것 같지, 그치?

 

Are you going to study hard from now on? I suppose not. : 너 이제부터 공부 열심히 할거야? 안 그럴 거 같은데..

(= I don't think so)

 

 

※ think나 believe 등으로 바꿔도 약간의 차이는 있으나 무방

 

 

  

2. suppose, supposing S+ V

 - 이면 어쩌지?..이면 어쩌냐? (= what if?)

  

나 늦게 일어나면 어쩌지? : Suppose (=Supposing) I get up late? 

 

 

내 여자친구가 헤어지자고 하면 어쩌냐?

 

Suppose (=Supposing) my girlfriend says "let's break up"?

 

 

3. be supposed to do

 - 해야돼 (=should), -하기로 돼있어 (하지만, 못할 것 같음)

   

※ 참고 : be not supposed to do : ..하면 안돼 (권고)

 

 

I'm supposed to return this book by Friday, but I'm not sure if I can.

 

 

이 책 금요일까지 반납해야 하는데, 그럴 수 있을지 모르겠네..

 

 

You're not supposed to walk on the grass. : 잔디밭 위로 걸어다니면 안돼

4. be supposed to do의 또 다른 뜻

 

 - (사람들이) ..라고들 해 (=..라고들 그래) 

 

 

 

[예문을 보면] 

 

김치 are supposed to be good for the health. : 김치는 건강에 좋다고들 해

 

I'm supposed to look like my father. : 나 우리 아버지 닮았다고들 그래..
